Update on Enrollment

Here is an updated article on enrollment at SJSU:

Admissions Update

Date: 12/02/2008

Challenges brought on by California's budget shortfall have forced California State University to limit enrollment on all 23 campuses for the first time in history. Systemwide impaction will affect all prospective students. The application deadline for students who intend to enroll as freshmen at San José State in fall 2009 was Sunday, November 30. Deadlines for other applicant groups and campuses vary. Review the following links for more information.

Yeah I read that article on the SJSU main page. I was concerned because my younger brother wants to attend SJSU in a couple of years. I wonder how high the admissions standards will go..do you think they will raise the minimum GPA to get in?????

This is certainly a sad situation that SJSU must face. However, I am not at all surprised that this has occurred, as the State of California has continually passed legislation or initiated new programs without adequate funding sources. The State of California for many years has stolen dollars from cities, counties and special districts to fund new programs or legislation and now cities and counties can no longer be a bank for the State of California’s poor fiscal management and overspending. The result is that education suffers a great deal from this poor management. Although this situation is complex, the simple fact is that if you spend more money than you have and don’t have a means to repay it, you have to stop spending. Additionally, you can’t continually tax people more and disrespectfully continue uncontrolled spending.

I am encouraged that Chancellor Charles B. Reed has taken the necessary steps to assist SJSU survive this fiscal crisis. I only wish our legislators in Sacramento would take a hint and be prudent and fiscally responsible. The future of California's economy and wellbeing is dependent on the educational opportunities that SJSU and other state universities provide.
